Located in the province of Segovia, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range and very close to the border with the Community of Madrid, the majestic Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso is one of the gems of Spanish Rococo architecture.
Philip V, the first Spanish monarch of the House of Bourbon, longed for his childhood in the Palace of Versailles. In order to remember his early years, around 1720, he ordered a palace and gardens inspired by those of the French court of his grandfather, Louis XIV, to be built in the Royal Site of San Ildefonso.
With this ticket to the Palace of La Granja, you can explore the rooms of this royal residence at your leisure, decorated according to the tastes of the monarchs who have passed through it throughout history. Particularly noteworthy is the Marble Room, whose ceiling is decorated with an allegory of The Abduction of Europa.
The palace also houses the Spanish Crown Tapestry Museum. This is the richest collection of tapestries in the world, together with that of the Vienna Museum. Among the main tapestries on display, Los Honores, woven by Pierre van Aelst, stands out. Also worth seeing are the nine allegorical cloths of the virtues, made in 1520 for Emperor Charles V, which allude to Fortune, Prudence, Wisdom, Justice, Vice, Fame, Honour, Faith and Nobility.
Your ticket will also allow you to visit the gardens of the Royal Palace of La Granja. Its ornamental fountains, which are activated on certain days of the year, are true sculptural gems. Among the most important fountains are the fountains of Fame and the fountain of the Baths of Diana.
