At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Baelo Claudia archaeological site parking lot to set off on a free tour of one of the most impressive Roman sites in Andalusia. Let’s dive into 2,000 years of history, right on the edge of the Atlantic.
As soon as we cross the ancient Puerta de Gades gates, we’ll explore the Forum, surrounded by the Basilica, Voting Hall, and even the Temple of Isis, a surprising tribute to an Egyptian goddess in Roman Spain. We’ll hear about the Capital Triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, and how their temples stood beside local shops, markets, and bathhouses.
Throughout the tour, we'll learn why this city thrived: its prime location for tuna fishing, its connection to North Africa, and its famous export, garum, a fermented fish sauce shipped throughout the Empire.
We'll also visit the on-site museum, where we'll observe original artifacts from daily Roman life: a stone sundial, the statue, and tombstone of Junia, columns, capitals, and tools used for fishing, hunting, and daily life. We’ll end at the detailed city model, which will help you fully visualize the architectural layout and scale of ancient Baelo Claudia.
Then, after 2.5 hours of sightseeing, we'll bring the tour to an end at this final stop.
