Matera Sightseeing Tour
At the appointed time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta 5 and set off on this sightseeing tour of Matera, where we'll pass by the main attractions of this beautiful city in the Basilicata region.
Throughout the tour, you'll be provided with an audio guide in Italian and English with commentary that will tell you about the history of Matera, as well as interesting information about the monuments you'll see.
First, we'll pass by one of the main symbols of the late medieval Matera, the Castello Tramontano, located on the Collina di Lapillo. We'll learn all about the strategic role this 16th-century fortress had and admire the details of its architecture from the outside.
We'll continue the tour in the Piazzetta Pascoli, whose viewpoint will offer us an incredible view of Matera. The Sasso Caveoso or the Gravina will take center stage in this rural landscape, where the architecture carved in the rock will leave you breathless.
Afterward, we'll stop at the Piazza Vittorio Veneto to explore the heart of modern Matera. Here, you'll see the cathedral and learn about the urban evolution of the city. Our tour of Matera will also take us to the Belvedere Colombo viewpoint, where you'll take in one of the best scenic views of the city.
From here, we'll descend to Barisano, the famous Sassi of Matera. From the vehicle, we'll see the buildings carved into the rock, such as the Chiesa rupestre di Sant'Agostino, where we'll stop at its viewpoint. Plus, we'll go to the Chiesa rupestre di Sant'Antonio Abate, one of the most symbolic sites in this part of the city.
Another place we'll visit will be the Casa Grotta, a typically furnished cave house that will help us understand what life was like in the Sassi until the 1950s. From here, we'll explore the Via Madonna delle Virtú, admiring an incredible landscape known for its hanging bridge, the Torrente Gravina, and the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana.
Finally, we'll head to the Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, the final touch on our tour before returning to the starting point after 2 hours.
