Ketchikan is known as the salmon capital of the world, but also as one of Alaska’s most haunted towns. This old frontier town, famous for its fishing harbour and its former brothels, is reputed to be home to several places that are said to be haunted. Are you up for discovering them?
To explore them, we’ll meet by the sculpture known as ‘The Rock’, the starting point for this walking tour on which we’ll set out in search of Ketchikan’s most spine-chilling ghost stories. Our first stop will be outside the Gilmor Hotel, a modest establishment where several guests claim to have witnessed the presence of various spectres.
We’ll continue our tour at the former Yates Hospital. This is an abandoned building with a long history of paranormal activity, with reports of children’s laughter, unexplained footsteps and wandering shadows.
After uncovering the possible cause of some of these occurrences, we’ll head to Creek Street, the main thoroughfare of Ketchikan’s now-defunct Red Light District. It is on this very street that we’ll stop in front of Dolly’s House, a former brothel said to be haunted by a famous ghost.
Finally, we’ll hear some ghost stories from the traditional Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian communities, and, after a 2-hour tour, we’ll return to the meeting point. Before we say goodbye, we’ll talk about several ghost ships that have been sighted off this stretch of the Alaskan coast.
