Discover the rich artistic and cultural heritage of a charming Apulian town on our Grottaglie Private Tour. You'll explore this picturesque town and see some of its beautiful ceramics.
Grottaglie Private Tour
Having met up at Porta San Giorgio at the agreed time, we'll set off on our private tour of Grottaglie's monumental and cultural heritage.
Our guided tour will begin with the town's picturesque historic centre, which is full of palaces and churches. We'll visit the town's most famous religious building, which is the 14th-century Mother Church of Grottaglie.
Next, we'll move on to Episcopo Castle. This fortress was built in the 14th century, and its original core consisted of a rectangular keep and what is now considered the eastern sector. It was later enlarged, as the Baroque façade we can see today was the result of subsequent alterations.
The former stables of this fortress house the Ceramic Museum, which we'll visit to learn more about an artistic tradition that dates back centuries. As we explore the museum's rooms, we'll see archaeological finds, traditional and contemporary ceramics, maiolica and scenes from the nativity.
Afterwards, we'll visit the nearby ceramics district that sprung up along the San Giorgio ravine. Here, master ceramists created workshops and kilns in underground spaces that were once used as oil mills. This gave rise to a flourishing artistic activity that still brings fame to Grottaglie, which is known as "the city of ceramics".
Having spent 2 hours walking around this fascinating town, we'll say our goodbyes and finish our private tour of Grottaglie.
