On this tour into Palermo's catacombs, you'll get to see the remains of hundreds of mummies and uncover all the secrets hidden under Sicily's capital city. Find out about its fascinating history!
About Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs
The Palermo Catacombs stretch through interconnected galleries carved into volcanic rock, covering an area of around 300 square meters (3230 square feet). These burial chambers hold about 2,000 skeletons and mummified bodies, including, according to legend, the remains of the Count of Cagliostro.
Mummies were placed in different galleries according to their gender, social status, and profession. The oldest corridor is occupied by the Capuchin Friars, who are mummified in the traditional garments of their order. There's also a room dedicated to priests, preserved in their grand religious robes.
Other areas of interest include the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix that holds the bodies of young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the corridor of families.

Once we're inside, we'll explore the different sections the catacombs are organised into, such as the area dedicated to the Capuchin Friars, the tomb of young Rosalia Lombardo (known as "sleeping beauty" due to her lifelike appearance), or the corridor dedicated to notable figures such as the sculptors Filippo Pennino and Lorenzo Marabitti.
After learning all about the catacombs, we'll go into the Cementerio de los Capuchinos, an enchanting historical place where many of Palermo's most famous figures rest. You'll see authentic tombs and monumental sculptures!
Then, we'll walk to the Palermo Cathedral Catacombs, where many more of the city's historical figures lie. The tour of these underground catacombs is without a guide.
Finally, after 2 hours, we'll say our goodbyes in front of the cathedral.
