At the indicated time, we’ll meet at Milepost 35.5, where we’ll receive a brief introduction to the hiking route we’re about to take through Deer Canyon. Lace up your hiking shoes!
As soon as we begin walking, we’ll head in search of the entrance to Deer Canyon, one of the lesser-known slot canyons in Antelope Valley. The key moment will come when we descend a 41-meter (134-foot) staircase that will gradually lead us deep between towering sandstone walls.
Once inside, we’ll move through a narrow corridor carved into Navajo sandstone, a type of dune-origin sandstone. Its winding geometry isn’t simply an aesthetic whim, but the result of ancient hydrodynamic processes. We’ll observe how sediment movement has carved and smoothed these passages over thousands of years. The photos you’ll take here will be incredible!
During the hike, we’ll see how the light filters in diagonally, how the shadows create dramatic shapes, and how the colors shift with every step. We’ll walk at a controlled pace to adapt to the uneven terrain, including loose sand sections and more compact areas.
We’ll also pay attention to the erosion marks between polished rock surfaces and small cavities formed by sediment during sudden flash floods.
At the end of the route, we’ll emerge from the canyon having identified the main geological elements that explain the unique morphology of Deer Canyon.
