Treme Neighbourhood Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet up on 718 N Rampart St, where we'll set off on our guided tour of Treme, which is also known as New Orleans' African American neighborhood.
Firstly, we'll stroll around Congo Square and Louis Armstrong park to begin exploring the spirit of the oldest African American neighborhood in the US. In the 18th century, when freedom was just a dream for the African-American population, in this neighborhood they already enjoyed the title of free person. On the tour, we'll reveal why this was so, as well as tons of other fascinating fun facts.
Throughout the tour, we'll visit important historical sites such as St. Augustine's Church, the first black Catholic church in the United States. We'll discover how the freedom of this neighborhood was cut short after the Civil War and we'll learn about the history of the Ku Klux Klan and its numerous persecutions in this district.
We'll stroll through the picturesque streets lined with this area's characteristic architecture and discover the so-called "Creole" houses. Of course, we'll also learn about the history of jazz. Did you know that the origins of this revolutionary music can be found in the Treme district?
Finally, having spent about 2 hours learning about the origins of New Orleans and its Afro-American culture, we'll finish our tour in Louis Armstrong Park.
