In 1556, Emperor Charles V decided to abdicate in Brussels. The Holy Roman Empire would go to his brother Ferdinand, while the inheritance of the Hispanic kingdoms would fall to his son, the new king Philip II. After this historical event of renunciation of the throne, the most powerful man in Europe in the 16th century decided to retire to a quiet place, away from political intrigues. For this, he chose a small Hieronymite monastery located in La Vera, a quiet region in the north of Extremadura.
With this ticket to the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste, you can explore at your own pace, where Charles V spent the last two years of his life. The emperor's legacy is still very present in the Royal Room, most notably in the black curtains that the monarch ordered to be placed out of respect for mourning the death of his wife, Isabella of Portugal.
The Gothic and Renaissance cloisters of the monastery are also worth a visit. The former dates from the 15th century, while the latter has an outstanding collection of decorative elements. The emperor used both of these spaces to walk and meditate, remembering all the successes and failures of his long reign.
In addition, you can visit the gardens of the monastery of Yuste. There you will find a small pond where Charles V himself used to fish. Don't miss the monastery church either, where the emperor ordered a rehearsal of his own burial to see firsthand how his funeral would be before he died.
